Partition of Bengal 1905: Throes of the Revolutionary Movement - Selections from ‘Jugantar’

Original Bengali Book “Agnijuger Agnikatha (Jugantar)” - Compiled and Edited by Anshuman Banerjee, Translated by Krishnokoli Mukherjee

About the Book :

This book is a collection of selected articles from the Bengali book “Agnijuger Agnikatha (Jugantar)”, translated in English.

A Bengali weekly journal “Jugantar” was initiated in March 1906 which was generally supervised by Sri Aurobindo. The role of Jugantar was significant in initiating the great nationalist movement in Bengal, in which Sri Aurobindo also contributed regularly with his articles.

Between 1906 and 1908 the editions of Jugantar which have been retrieved, clearly indicate that the journal published various national and international news of great significance and constantly advocated India’s complete freedom for progress.

It was due to the relentless efforts of the former secretary of Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture Late Joya Mitter, that these important documents were retrieved and the microfilms of the same were preserved carefully by Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture and the Ashram. From the documents, the compilation of articles from Jugantar has been done to create the original Bengali book.

Sri Aurobindo in Calcutta - A Pilgrim's Trail

Original Bengali Book - "Kolkatay Sri Aurobindo Smrititirtha" written by Anshuman Banerjee, Translated by Krishnokoli Mukherjee

About the Book :

The book is a collection of stories of the sites where Sri Aurobindo lived and worked in a tumultuous time marked by the Bengal Partition and the few years thereafter. The centre stage of Sri Aurobindo’s revolutionary activities for the freedom movement was Kolkata, between 1906 and 1910.

The most relevant portions of this book have been translated into English and compiled in this book.

With the tireless efforts of Late Joya Mitter who was then the secretary of Sri Aurobindo Institute of Culture, "Sri Aurobindo and Calcutta Memorial Committee" was created with Prof Nishith Ranjan Ray as the President. The objective of this committee was to set up plaques in places of Kolkata where Sri Aurobindo had lived, in order to preserve the memories of his revolutionary activities and also to spread awareness about the contributions of all the associated freedom fighters of this glorious era. The historical significance associated with the locations of the established plaques and the transformation of Aurobindo Ghose the revolutionary to Sri Aurobindo the seer and yogi have been beautifully portrayed in this book. There is a perfect combination of the sweet, light moments and the grave, solemn incidents of his life.

An Anthology of Writings on Joyadi

An Anthology of Writings on Joyadi

Translated by Krishnokoli Mukherjee

About the Book :

The idea of creating a book on Joyadi had been circulating among those who had the opportunity of working in close association with her. The purpose was more to understand the rhythm of life of this rare personality.

Whenever we think of Joyadi, her absolute faith in spirituality comes to mind. Her magnanimity touched the lives of all who met her. All objects of nature were close to her heart. The name of the school "The Future Foundation" founded by her was very significant as she established a strong foundation in the lives of students. The beautiful, sylvan surroundings of the institute were the outcome of her aesthetic sense and her eye for details.

Accomplishing any goal was not difficult for her, which she did removing all obstacles in her own way. Her loving and caring nature attracted so many people that when she suddenly left, they were left helpless. Everyone speaks of Joyadi with choked voices and eyes full of tears. Her ideals stood firm against the rough tides that came along her path. Many of her close associates were prepared for contributing in the book and the concerned persons were requested to share their experiences with Joyadi. The list included her extended family, friends, students, teachers, people from Pondicherry Ashram, eminent persons from the fields of Literature, Education, Art and Culture. We got totally immersed in this work and everyone contributed gladly. We would like to offer our gratitude to each writer and our apologies for any write-up that may not have been included. Last but not the least, the publication of this book was possible because of the sincere efforts put in by Ranjan Mitter, Arijit Kumar and Amlan Dutta. We are truly fortunate!
