I graduated from The Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, in the year 1993, where I studied the Indian Style of painting. My scope of study included various indigenous forms of painting, including Miniature, Fresco, and the Rajasthani style. It was the Bengal Style of ‘Wash painting’, however, which attracted me the most.
In this “Bengal Style of Wash painting” holding medium or “base”, predominantly use to be Silk, and fine quality paper attached with glue to a hard surface like wooden board.
I have modified this style a little but the process remains same as it was done erstwhile at the time of Abonindra Nath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Khitis Chandra Majumder like Great Bengal School Masters of that era.
We have our ancestral property in a village named Chandanagar in Nadia. The exquisite beauty of this quiet place evokes and has helped evolve my aesthetic sensibilities.
I love the way of wash-painting, though it is time consuming, hard and challenging- in the end it truly is bliss. It is a thing of beauty, it is pure joy. The presence lingers even after the moment has passed, much like the Indian Ragas.
